[ She shifts around a bit. ]

... No, but I'm on my way home. So it's okay. [ Sort of! She needs a cab or something. ]

[ Oscar stares long and hard. He wonders if that's okay. ]

How far is your home?

[ In complete contrast, Toph doesn't meet his eyes at all. Not because she's impolite or anything (she is, though that's not the reason.) But if Oscar takes a good look, it should be clear that she can't see.

Anyway, she shrugs. ]

Up by the lake. [ which should be pretty telling. ] I've made the trip before, though. [ Yeah, when the sun was still up. ]

[ Telling, indeed, but it takes Oscar a moment for it to sink in that this girl is from the lake, and then he starts. ]

I'm surprised! If anyone found out, you could be in trouble. [ His gaze drifts down. ] Or your dog could be in trouble.

[ Since when did they admit dogs to dances? ]

[ She frowns, about to reassure him that no sir, she wouldn't be in trouble because she's Toph ~~Bei Fong~~ of the Panda family, but his last comment makes her pause. That's never occurred to her before. ]

... Why would Fluffles get in trouble?

[ Oh, sweet child, she has no idea. ]

A girl's dog whose name is Fluffles would be hard to replace. Imagine what would happen if someone took off with him!

[ For one thing, Toph was too young to name him when he came into her life. (Pils probably did.) For another, Fluffles strongly resents the implication that someone could take him away from her at all. He barks up at Oscar, because that's mean! ]

Hey, for a dog with a really lame name, Fluffles is pretty ferocious. I'm not sure anyone could take him away from me.

[ You know what's mean? Calling Fluffles' name lame. That's just low, little lady. Yet, in spite of the bark, Oscar becomes louder, more casual. ]

It's never good to assume! . . . But I'm sure Fluffles can watch out for himself. Still, you should be careful. What if it had been someone else instead of me?

[ But it's lame because her sister thought of it!!! :( ]

Someone else wouldn't have called out to some kid just to have a conversation in the middle of the road this late at night. [ What does that make you look like, Oscar. ]

[ Shame not Fluffles' honorable name!! ]

How do you know that? It's odd to see young girls wandering around here alone this late at night. . . . The same could be said for a lot of other people, but point is, it's not going to be safe. I was just concerned!

[ She waves a hand dismissively and turns to leave. ]

Well, thanks for your concern but I think Fluffles and me'll manage.

[ He rubs the nape of his neck. He doesn't pursue, though he calls after her. ]

Is Fluffles your guide?

[ Despite her attitude, she calls back. She still knows her manners! Sort of. Some of them, anyway. ]

Yep. Don't let his size fool you. He's the best seeing-eye dog in the business. [ There is a bark. ]

[ Seeing-eye dog. Of course.

Oscar takes a few steps at that, power walking to close the distance between them somewhat. ]

Would he mind another person to walk with?

[ Toph and Fluffles exchange a glance. A vague one, since Fluffles has to nudge her leg a bit to get her to look down. He barks once, and Toph shrugs. ]

Fluffles seems to think you're okay. You better not prove him wrong.

I'll try not to. [ Thanks, Fluffles. He jogs shortly, until he's by Toph and Fluffles' side, at which he slows to match their pace. There. Much better. ]

... So what's your name? [ He isn't a stranger if she knows his name, technically! ] And why're you so keen on walking with us?

My name is Oscar. [ He looks at Toph, then at Fluffles. ] And, well, I don't feel very good when I see people walking by themselves. It looks lonely.

[ Rolling her eyes!! ]

I told you, I'm not by myself. I've got Fluffles. [ He barks up at Oscar. Thanks for forgetting his presence. ]

[ Aw, Fluffles. You're not a person! ]

That's true. But it's always better to walk in bigger numbers at night. [ He nods to himself. ] It's safer that way!

Why, 'cause it's so dark? [ She means for it to come out snidely...! But she can't help but grin a little, and that takes away the sharpness of her words. Oops. ]

[ Whatever he felt about the tone, that thought quickly morphs into something more congenial when he catches the faint grin. Ah, so she isn't as stony as she makes herself out to be, is she? Oscar looks up as they walk. ]

It's what's in the dark. There doesn't even have to be anything in there – we imagine things, because we can't see anything.

[ He lowers his gaze. ]

Ah, but that's probably not a big deal for you. You don't sound like you care about the time of the day.

Nope, not really. Or, well, it does get kinda cold at night, so I guess that's a problem sometimes. [ She has an entire collection of cardigans and jackets thanks to dear old dad, though. So it isn't a problem either. ]

But I've been able to take care of myself fine so far. So, it isn't a big deal you know?

Yeah. And you've got Fluffles.

[ The next bit is less about her or him and more about people, in general: ]

Even if you can take care of yourself, it's always better to have someone you can experience everything with.

... Huh. [ Toph's quiet a moment. She's never really thought about it like that before. ] I guess that makes sense. Otherwise it'd get pretty lonely.
